A quick introduction

Recommended stay
3–4 days; add time for a separate regional excursion.
Best for
Food · Pandas · Relaxed city days
When to visit
Consider March–May or September–November. Summer is often hot and rainy; winter can feel damp and chilly.
Major airports
Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (TFU) and Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (CTU). They are different airports, so check your flight details.
Getting around
Combine metro journeys with neighborhood walks. Use taxis or a planned transfer where they simplify the final part of a route.

Why visit Chengdu?

Chengdu is a place to leave space between the sights. A panda visit can share a trip with a park-side tea break, a temple neighborhood and several memorable meals. Stay in the city for a few days or add a carefully chosen excursion into the surrounding region.

Experiences to make time for

Visit the panda base

Plan around the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding’s current reservation and entry guidance.

Make time for tea

Leave an unhurried break around People’s Park or the Wenshu area instead of rushing between landmarks.

Explore culture and food together

Choose Wuhou Shrine and Jinli, or another historic neighborhood, alongside a Sichuan meal.

Where to stay

Choose an area around your interests and onward journey. These are neighborhoods to consider, not hotel endorsements.

Chunxi Road / Taikoo Li

Consider this area for shopping, dining and a central base.

Wenshu / central Chengdu

Consider it for temple-area walks and a quieter neighborhood emphasis.

Food to try

  • Mapo tofu
  • Dandan noodles
  • Sichuan hotpot

First-time tips

  • Check panda-base reservations before building the rest of that day around the visit.
  • Tell restaurants your chili preference and dietary requirements clearly; do not assume a tofu dish is vegetarian.
  • Keep airport transfers separate in your planning: TFU and CTU are not interchangeable.
A FLEXIBLE STARTING POINT

A flexible itinerary

Adjust the order and pace around your arrival, interests, weather and attraction availability. This is an idea for your trip, not a fixed tour.

  1. Day 1

    Find the city’s pace

Explore the Wenshu area and leave time for tea and a first Sichuan meal.

  2. Day 2

    Pandas and an easy afternoon

Use your reserved panda-base visit, then keep the afternoon light with a park or café stop.

  3. Day 3

    Culture and neighborhoods

Choose Wuhou Shrine and Jinli, then finish with a relaxed food-focused evening.

Good to combine with

  • Dujiangyan for a separate day trip
  • Leshan for an additional excursion
  • Chongqing for a second city stay

Questions, answered.

How much time should I allow for Chengdu?

Start with three full days for pandas, food and city neighborhoods. Add days for destinations outside the city.

Is all Chengdu food very spicy?

Sichuan cuisine includes many flavors. Ask about each dish and make your chili preference and dietary needs clear when ordering.

Can I combine Chengdu and Chongqing?

Yes, they can form a two-city route. Check train schedules for your dates and give each city its own overnight stay.
