Scenery · Countryside stays · Photography
When to visit
Consider April–May or September–October, with rain and river conditions checked close to travel. Seasonal conditions can change water-based plans.

Guilin Liangjiang International Airport (KWL). Confirm whether you are transferring to Guilin city or directly to Yangshuo.
Getting around
Guilin, Yangshuo and the river piers are different transfer points. Check the exact railway station and cruise departure pier; use planned road transport where it simplifies your route.

Why visit Guilin?

Think of Guilin as both a city stop and the gateway to a wider landscape. Spend some time by the city’s rivers and hills, then leave room for the Li River and Yangshuo countryside. Splitting your stay can give the scenery a more relaxed place in your trip.

Experiences to make time for

See the Li River landscape

Choose a suitable river experience after checking its route, departure point and current conditions.

Slow down around Yangshuo

Leave time for countryside views and short walks instead of treating Yangshuo as a brief city stop.

Explore Guilin’s waterside

Include Elephant Trunk Hill and a relaxed central walk before or after your countryside days.

Where to stay

Choose an area around your interests and onward journey. These are neighborhoods to consider, not hotel endorsements.

Central Guilin / riverside

Consider this base for city sights and the arrival or departure part of your journey.

Yangshuo / Yulong River countryside

Consider staying outside the center for a landscape-focused visit; check the final road transfer.

Food to try

  • Guilin rice noodles
  • Yangshuo beer fish
  • Pork with Lipu taro

First-time tips

  • Check the exact station on every rail booking; the Guilin area has several passenger stations.
  • Do not assume your river journey begins beside your hotel; confirm the pier and transfer.
  • Keep a land-based alternative for days when river or weather conditions change.
A FLEXIBLE STARTING POINT

A flexible itinerary

Adjust the order and pace around your arrival, interests, weather and attraction availability. This is an idea for your trip, not a fixed tour.

  1. Day 1

    Arrive in Guilin

Settle in and choose a gentle riverside walk or Elephant Trunk Hill visit.

  2. Day 2

    River and Yangshuo

Take your chosen Li River experience if conditions allow, then continue to your Yangshuo base.

  3. Day 3

    Countryside at your own pace

Explore a suitable part of the Yangshuo or Yulong River countryside, with breaks and weather flexibility.

  4. Day 4

    A slower final morning

Keep time for another short walk or a local meal before your onward transfer.

Good to combine with

  • Longji terraces for an additional overnight or separate excursion
  • Yangshuo as part of the same regional stay

Questions, answered.

Should I stay in Guilin or Yangshuo?

Guilin suits city sights and some transport connections; Yangshuo suits a countryside-focused stay. Splitting your nights is one option.

Are all Guilin railway stations interchangeable?

No. Confirm the station name and transfer route before buying a ticket or arranging a pickup.

Can I add Longji to this trip?

Yes, but allow separate transport and sightseeing time. With a short stay, choose it deliberately rather than adding it to an already full river day.
